Tales of Monkey Island: How appropriate, you fight like a cow.

What better way to kick off tentaclechow.com then with a game that shares kinship with our namesake?
There is no better way, so stop thinking about it.

The fine folks at Telltale Games have resurrected the mighty pirate Guybrush Threepwood from Davey Jones' locker and blessed the world with another installment of the Monkey Island franchise. I don't know how they did it but I sure am glad that they did. I thought for sure I'd never see another MI game *shakes fist at LucasArts*

I present to you our first review:

Now, I'm not going to go into a review, because frankly that is not the goal here at TC, but I will tell you that I HIGHLY recommend picking it up if you're into classic point-and-click adventures. TT have done a fine job keeping the spirit of the MI universe alive in TOMI. Consider this a personal thank-you.

Telltale have a few different flavors available for TOMI and there's probably one that fits your liking, but we here at TC prefer the Deluxe Edition. Why? Well let me tell you. The deluxe edition is full of little tidbits that harken back to a time when PC games really gave you your money's worth. Back in they day it was not at all uncommon to find amazing instruction manuals, innovative copy protection in the form of an artifact that would exist in the game world, or just a cool collectible thing-y.

Now, TT hasn't gone ALL out with all that great stuff from days past, but they sure as heck did a decent job. The deluxe edition contains some pretty sweet items:

  • Glossy, full-color outer "Treasure Chest" box
  • DVD slipcover featuring artwork by the mighty Steve Purcell (if you don't know who he is, shame on you)
  • Fabric map of the game world
  • Exclusive tarot card
  • Club 41 drink coaster
  • Button from the "Trial of the Century"
  • Piece O' Eight

All in all, I like this edition. The extra items are of decent quality and are pretty interesting. The disparity in price between the regular and deluxe editions is 15 bucks which is about the norm nowadays. In my opinion the Purcell art and the Piece O' Eight make it worth the price alone. I am a little biased however since I was already a fan of the franchise to begin with and I would have ordered this edition regardless. Take a look at the photos and decide for yourself.
